History of 'CONYNGHAM SCHOOL'

The Conyngham School Ramsgate
 
The Conyngham School was officially opened for the Kent County Council on Tuesday, 8th January.  The ceremony was performed by the Earl of Mount Charles on behalf of his father, the Most Honourable the Marquess Conyngham.

Dedicatory prayers were offered by the Rev C. Hartley Bird, M.A., Vicar of St Laurence's Ramsgate and the Chairman of the Governors, the Rev Harcourt Samuel, OBE.
 
The Conyngham Family have long associations with the land on which the school was built.  The Marquess at the time (1963) gave permission for the school to bear his name and also to incorporate features of his family arms in its badge, which was designed by the Thanet School of Art.
 
The first pupils arrived for their first lessons on Thursday 10th of January.
 
Built by the County Council at a cost of approximately £141,500 and was designed by the Kent County Architect Mr E.T. Ashley Smith, F.R.I.B.A. The principal contrators were Messrs. W.W. Martin (Thanet) Ltd., Of Ramsgate
 
The first Headmaster was Mr Desmond Smith, B.A who came from being the headmaster of Old Marston Secondary School, Oxford.
